چکیده

Invasive pulmonary aspergillosis is uncommon in man and is rare as a cause of death in children. When diffuse pulmonary infection with aspergillus has developed it has nearly always complicated a pre-existing disorder, either of the lungs themselves or one of a more generalized nature (Symmers, 1964). We present, therefore, an account of fatal pulmonary aspergillosis affecting a child and her infant sister, who had both previously been in normal health. The bacteriological investigation of the infected tissues and of the children's environment is also described.

Pulmonary aspergillosis in two families.

REPORTS of more than one case of pulmonary aspergillosis occurring in a family are rare. Hertzog, Smith & Goblin (1949) described a brother and sister aged 5 and 11 who died of pneumonia within a month of each other, necropsy in one of them showing multiple granulomata from which A. fumigatus was isolated. More recently, Strelling et al. (1966) reported two fatal cases of the invasive type of a...

Acute pulmonary aspergillosis in immunocompetent subjects after exposure to bark chippings.

We describe 2 cases of immunocompetent males with acute community-acquired invasive pulmonary aspergillosis developing shortly after spreading bark chippings. One patient with a fatal outcome was initially diagnosed as allergic alveolitis rather than infection and received steroid treatment illustrating the obvious challenges in the differential diagnosis between these disease entities.

Fatal pulmonary aspergillosis presenting as acute eosinophilic pneumonia in a previously healthy child.

A previously healthy boy presented with cough and diffuse pulmonary interstitial infiltrates. Acute eosinophilic pneumonia was diagnosed by bronchoalveolar lavage in the absence of a demonstrable infectious etiologic agent. Corticosteroid therapy resulted in immediate improvement but was followed by respiratory distress and death from invasive aspergillosis and Pseudomonas cepacia sepsis.
